454,000 miles and Counting

Rick Deutsch is a speaker, an author and an adventurer.  But he wants no roadside adventures from his beloved automobiles, so he still follows his father’s advice and pours new Quaker State® motor oil into his engines every 3,000 miles.  “He was old-school and stressed the importance of changing the oil,” Deutsch recalls.

His first car was good enough for college commuting, but the second purchase came from the heart: a 1973 Dodge Charger, ordered to spec at the dealer and still cherished today.  It underwent one of the most severe tests that any engine could experience while Deutsch was stationed at a northern Maine Air Force base: Without a garage or block heater but with the lubrication of Quaker State, Deutsch would start it in the sub-zero degree mornings.

In 1994, when he finally decided to restore the Charger, “the mechanic opened up the engine and said: ‘This is cherry.  There is no sludge.  It just looks great.'”  Today, the Charger has driven more than 454,000 miles.  Deutsch is still changing its oil every 3,000 miles himself, recording every change and maintenance on file cards, and treating his two other vintage cars – a 1959 Buick Electra 225 and a 1955 Thunderbird – to the same kind of lubrication care.  The Buick gets Quaker State, and the Thunderbird Shell Rotella® T motor oil.
