What is Motor Oil Matters?
Motor Oil Matters (MOM) is a new program from the American Petroleum Institute (API) that will help you identify quality-minded motor oil distributors and oil change locations nationwide. You’ll know one when you see the MOM mark—that’s the sign you’re receiving the high-quality products you’ve come to expect.
Why Should I Look for the Motor Oil Matters Mark?
You know quality motor oil makes a difference in your engine’s performance, but what you might not know is some motor oils might not provide the performance you expect. The MOM mark will identify distributors and oil change locations committed to providing motor oil meeting the performance standard recommended by most vehicle and engine manufacturers.
Who Participates in Motor Oil Matters?
MOM is designed for everyone—motor oil marketers, distributors, oil change locations and consumers. Distributors and oil change locations are licensed through this program so consumers can feel confident in their purchase.
What is the Process for Licensing Distributors and Oil Change Locations?
Before becoming licensed, distributors and oil change locations will need to demonstrate that they meet a new API chain-of-custody standard. This will include an auditing process to ensure they qualify for MOM. Distributors in the program will be audited every three years and subject to random audits. Oil change locations will be subject to unannounced random audits. Only licensed participants may display the MOM mark.
When Should I Begin Looking for the Motor Oil Matters Mark?
API will begin licensing distributors and oil change locations later this year. At this time, consumers should begin looking for the MOM mark to ensure they’re receiving high-quality motor oil they can trust. To nominate your local oil change location, complete our online form.
